The Affordable Care Act & How It Is Going To Impact Our Country

The Affordable Care Act is being considered with a proposal to fix what is wrong with our health care system. The four areas this act mainly focuses on are as follows:

Stronger Consumer Rights and Protections

As of now, your current insurance company can now decide not to insure a child born with medical problems, or put a limit on the amount they will have to pay out over a lifetime. The Affordable Care Act will make sure every child is covered from birth and there will be no limit on the dollar amount any one person can receive.

More Affordable Coverage

The hospital and doctors will have to compete for the services that are offered and the consumer should benefit from this by having a lower price to pay for any service that is needed.

Better Access to Care

Since they will be lower prices for services, the providers will have to offer better care to keep their patients and enlist new ones.

Stronger Medicare

Hypothetical, the Affordable Care act will make Medicare stronger by reducing fraud and providing easier access to care for all Medicare consumers.

The above is what has been told will happen if/when the Affordable Care Act is put into order; however, many feel as if this is not true. Factors to be considered are as follows; if you do not have healthcare insurance in 2014 you will be penalized 1% of your income, or $95 (whichever is more). Also, in 2016 that amount will increase to 2.5 percent of your income. This is proposed to somehow make getting healthcare insurance easier for everyone.

Senior citizens will see an improvement in care for preventive services through Medicare with the Affordable Care Act and will get additional help paying for prescription drugs. They will also see cuts in the Medicare benefits for hearing aids, glasses and fitness center; therefore, it is a case of we give you something – we take something away.

Another factor to consider is for those that are under 27 years of age and not offered insurance through their job. They will be responsible for paying full price for their healthcare coverage; otherwise, penalized for not being covered. Those under 27 will be allowed to stay on their parent’s policy and this age will be raised from 18 years of age.

With the Affordable Care Act, Medicaid will be available to those that earn less than 133 percent of poverty line and middle class American must qualify for a government subsidies if they make no more than four times the poverty level and this amount will be paid to the insurance companies and show up on your bill as a discount. If you are considered wealthy then you will be expected to pay higher fees. Within five years, the federal government will add a 40 percent excise tax on all citizens earning over $200,000.

Another factor to the Affordable Care Act is that it does not make any provision for undocumented immigrants. They will not be eligible for Medicare or to buy insurance from the government. Insurance can be purchased by immigrants but they will have to pay a higher fee through a policy broker.

The last notable changes are for those whom are able to claim medical expenses on their tax return. The amount will change from 7.5 to 10 percent of your income; therefore, you will not get as much back in tax returns.

Overall, it appears that some people may benefit from the changes of the Affordable Care Act; however, more people are going to be paying a high price for their healthcare insurance and will also not be allowed to be without insurance, or will be issued a fine – and this is going to create an impact for many of people.

Gluten-Free Explained

The concept of a “gluten-free diet” has become rather buzz worthy in the last decade, and no wonder with celebrities such as Chelsea Clinton, Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Drew Brees, and Oprah Winfrey adopting this lifestyle change. Most now view this type of diet as “trendy”, but what does “gluten-free” really mean?

What is gluten?

Gluten is essentially a protein found in cereals, grains and wheat that aids in maintaining elasticity during the process of food production (such as the doughy texture involved in bread making). During the cooking process, when yeast ferments sugar, causing it to release carbon dioxide, the gluten is what causes the “rising” effect.

Gluten is common in many foods in nature, but it can also be an additive in foods that don’t naturally contain it.

Why go “gluten-free”?

Many sources argue over whether the benefits of eating a gluten-free diet outweigh the negatives, saying that a gluten-free diet can deprive the body of vital nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and fiber. But for most who adapt this lifestyle, it isn’t merely a matter of choice. These are the people who suffer from at least one of three gluten-related ailments; Celiac disease, which is by far the most common, affecting an estimated 1 in 100 Americans. This ailment occurs when gluten causes an inflammation in the lining of the small intestine which severely hinders the body’s digestive process. Those who suffer from wheat allergies and gluten intolerance also find it beneficial to maintain a gluten-free diet.

Some foods that do not contain gluten include: beans, seeds, unprocessed nuts, fresh eggs, fresh meats, fish and poultry, fruits, vegetables, and most dairy products.

The Pro’s and Con’s of a gluten-free lifestyle

Whether one decides to go gluten-free really depends on where they stand on the issue, and how informed they are. There are benefits and disadvantages:

Obviously, if you are one of those that are suffering with a gluten-related ailment, going gluten-free would be a no brainer. There are other advantages to this lifestyle, though. Many who have gone gluten-free have reported losing weight where they had failed in any other diet. A gluten free diet involves eating healthier, less processed foods, and would demand a greater attention to nutrition label reading. Gluten free dieters are additionally introducing a higher quality of grains, such as Amaranth and Quinoa, into their diets.

On the other hand, many who go gluten-free without seemingly needing to do so can cause themselves serious harm. If one isn’t sufficiently knowledgeable about which carbohydrates to eliminate, they could wind up losing energy and/or nutrients that are not necessary to eliminate in a gluten-free diet, which could also result in extraneous or unnecessary weight loss. Also, weight gain is a probable outcome of uninformed gluten-free dieting. Gluten free foods tend to be higher in fats and sugars than a “regular” diet. What’s more, going gluten free can actually CREATE digestive issues if the amount of dietary fiber needed to sustain the body’s proper function is unbalanced or cut down.

Not all carbohydrates contain gluten, and it is important to read up about it and consult a doctor before deciding to embark on a drastic lifestyle change.

Botox vs. Natural Alternatives:

Youth is an ever-popular concept in our society. Everywhere you look, you see beautiful, YOUNG people in advertisements dressed in fashionable clothing and having a great time. Enjoying their youth, you could say. However aging is an unavoidable part of life.

With age, the skin loses its elasticity and the layer of fat under the skin begins to thin, resulting in wrinkling. Also, the repeated contraction of specific muscles over time can create planes and folds in the skin above them. It is for this very reason that there has developed an entire market towards that goal of attaining everlasting youth. Some choose a medical treatment called Botox for cosmetic enhancement; others, more natural alternatives.

What is Botox?

Botox is derived from a protein that produces the bacterium Clotridium Botulinum. This bacteria is associated with the negative stigma of food poisoning, however it has been proven time and time again to be safe in clinical use. The utilization of this powerful toxin was originally to treat spasms; it acts to block signals between the nerves and the muscles, rendering those specific muscles paralyzed. Over time, however, research and development gave fruition to multiple other benefits of the drug. These include not only eliminating crow’s feet and wrinkles, but also alleviating excessive sweating (also known as ‘Hyperhidrosis’), and even relieving migraine headaches!

Side Effects of Botox

Botox can last typically anywhere from 4 to 6 months after injection. As with any drug, some side effects are possible. These include temporary bruising at the injection site, also slight and temporary headaches have been reported. Eye drooping can occur if the injection is rubbed and the underlying injectable is moved subcutaneously.

Risk Factors

Before using a Botox treatment, consulting your doctor is preferable. Botox doesn’t treat ALL wrinkles and some people such as pregnant women, women who are breastfeeding, and those with any type of neurological disorder are advised NOT to undergo the treatment.

Happily, if it turns out that Botox is not for you, do not despair. There are natural ways you can fight the aging process.

The Natural Choice for defying age

There are alternative ways to prevent the breakdown of skin cells, such as abstaining from alcohol and tobacco use. Applying sunscreen every day is also a common-knowledge trick to keep the wrinkles away.

Other more fundamental methods of fighting the aging process can include spa treatments, yoga, dietary changes and even juice fasting.

A method favored by doctors for fortifying the skin against aging seems to be a two-part process of exfoliation and moisturization. They advise to use a method of mildly “stripping” the old dead cells using products that contain either salicylic acid, alpha-hydroxy acid or a papaya- based enzyme. All of these, they claim, will help to naturally exfoliate the skin. Once the broken down cells have been sloughed away, you can then moisturize.

A tretinoin based cream is suggested for this. Tretinoin is a retinoid that doctors believe helps the production of collagen in the skin and also contains ultraviolet blocking properties. These types of creams, however, should not replace the use of sunscreen.

Possible side effects of tretinoin include: irritant reactions such as burning, scaling or dermatitis in those with sensitive skin. As with all other treatments, consult your doctor before using.

For most of us, we prefer to take a shower, or bath, each day. Many of us also bathe our children each, and every, night. The question arises as to if it is necessary, or not, to shower every day? The answer to this question is complex in nature for a couple of reasons. One being that taking a shower, or bath, every day mostly occurs solely in the United States. Secondly, studies have proven that taking a shower, or bath, every day can be unhealthy. It should also be noted that there are a vast array of benefits established by not showering on a daily basis.

Why American’s shower, or bathe, daily and other countries do not

The best one word answer that could be provided for this question would be customary; America’s have grown accustom to showering each, and every, day. To better understand, let’s take a look at the definitions of customary and accustom. Customary can be defined as; the usual practices associated with a particular society, place or set of circumstances. Accustom can be defined as; to familiarize, as by constant practice, use or habit. In America, showering every day is what society sees as “normal;” therefore, most citizens follow by these set guidelines.

In other countries, including the United Kingdom, many of citizens shower every other day or even less frequently. They do not feel as if there is a need to shower, and wash your hair, every single day. It is accustom for many of countries to shower only once, or twice, a week. It is also true that in some countries, like Africa, there is little to no running water. Therefore, in these circumstances, citizens are much less likely to use their water for taking a shower than for drinking and cooking.

How can showering on a daily basis be unhealthy?

The main reason why showering on a daily basis is unhealthy is because it prevents one’s body from helpful bacteria that boosts the immune system. When showering, most of us use and anti-bacterial soap that washes away 99% of all bacteria. Due to this factor, when showering on a daily basis, our immune system is unexposed to certain strands of bacteria in which we need exposure to in order to build up a resistance. Some of these bacteria can be lethal if never exposed to until an elderly age in life. At elderly ages, our immune systems are weak and unable to fight resistance against what at young ages are common viruses.

The benefits of not showering on a daily basis

Some may ask, “Why shouldn’t I shower on a daily basis?” This question has a wide variety of answer. Listed below are the benefits received by not showering on a daily basis:

Your skin will be softer

Will allow for your own odors to come through, not the smelly kind – the pheromone kind.

Reduces exposure to harmful chemicals found in soaps, body washes, shampoo, conditioners, ect.

Can reduce eczema rosacea and other skin irritations

Natural mood enhancers

It only requires a few moments with your pet in order to decrease your level of stress. As human beings, our bodies undergo a physical change during the time we spend with our pets. When spending time with your pet, a hormone in your body called cortisol, and is associated with stress, is lowered and the production of a chemical called serotonin in your body that is associated with well-being is increased.Pets offer an unconditional love is well-known for helping thus who suffer from depression. Hardened criminals in prison have shown long-term changes in behavior after interacting with pets; many of them experiencing mutual affection for the first time.

Keep blood pressure in check

Although it is still a good idea to eat right and stay fit, studies show that pets can help you to manage your blood pressure. In one study of 240 married couples, pet owners had lower blood pressure compared to the couples that were not pet owners. Others studies show that children with hypertension lowered their blood pressure while petting and playing with their dog. Doctors found that stress induced blood pressure continued to rise in those that did not own pets. Someone who lives a very stressful live may want to consider adopting a pet to reduce the wear and tear on their body oftentimes caused by stress, and or, depression.

Dogs and cats good for the heart

Research has shown that the long-term benefits of owning a dog, or cat, include a healthier heart. Over 20 years of study has shown that people who never owned a cat or dog are 40% more likely to die of a heart attack compared to the ones that had. Studies also show that 20 minutes of interaction with a dog can increase oxytocin levels by around 20%. Oxytocin is known as a cardio protective hormone which helps to protect the cardio vascular system from damage. In men who have previously experienced a heart attack, the chances of a second heart attack for those who own a dog is 400% lower than for those who do not own a dog; a statistic that has moved many cardiologists to write ‘get a dog’ into their prescriptions.

Better physical fitness

Those whom are owners of dogs tend to be more physically fit and less obese than those whom do not own a dog. Taking your dog for a daily, 30 minute walk (or two 15 minutes walks, one in the morning and one in the afternoon) will keep you active and ensure that you are meeting minimum requirements for healthy physical activity. Studies show that dog owners are more likely to reach their physical goals than those without canine companions. If you exercise with your pet, you will both benefit; therefore, newly trending nationwide are yoga classes for dogs, and their owners, called doga.

Help alarm people with diabetes

For those whom suffer from diabetes, a sudden drop in the blood glucose level can be very dangerous. Some dogs are trained to alert their owner of a sudden drop before it happens. These dogs are responding to chemical changes in the body that may give off a scent. This alarm gives the owner time to go grab a snack and avoid a potential life-threatening situation. These dog’s accuracy, and speed, can beat medical devices such as glucose meters and continuous glucose monitors; with an acute sense of smell, these dogs are able to react to a scent that researchers have yet to identify.

Seizure dogs

A seizure dog is one that is specially trained to live, and work alongside, those who have epilepsy. Most of these dogs are trained to bark, and alert, the parents of child if/when their child is having a seizure in another room, or outside. Some dogs are trained to lie next to the person having a seizure in order to aid in prevention. By lay down, the epileptic owner of the dog is able to put themselves in a safe position before a seizure; therefore, decreasing the chances of harming oneself from a fall.

Proven ways to get a good night’s sleep without medicine

If you are like most others, it is probably safe to say that you have bad sleeping habits. This is a well-known occurrence for people of all ages. Due to outside distractions, we oftentimes struggle to go to bed, and or, to fall asleep once we have gotten there. Below we will discuss the importance of sleep, sleep patterns and how to obtain a good night’s sleep without medication.

Why is sleep important?

The answer to this question is a variety of reasons. First, sleep is the state in which our body’s restore, grow, strengthen and rejuvenates. During sleep, the following occurs; energy is reinstated, memory is enriched, hormones are created and the systems of the body are improved. Sleep is necessary for survival and is crucial to the success, or demise, of our daily functioning.

What is a sleep pattern?

A sleep pattern is a consistent following of a bedtime, and awakening time, each night, and morning, of the week. The reasoning for this is due to the fact that our body’s function off of an internal clock and have the capabilities to adjust to the sleeping schedule in which your lifestyle allows for. By following a regular sleeping pattern your body is provided with the best opportunity for growth and strengthening.

To implement a sleeping pattern into your lifestyle we offer the following suggestions:

Allot reasonable hours for sleeping

Adjust your schedule to fit 7-9 hours of sleep

Allow time to prepare for bed

Using calming, and relaxing, techniques before be

Allot reasonable hours for sleeping

By allotting reasonable hours in which to sleep you are guaranteeing yourself the sleep you are in need of. To do so, you must adjust your schedule to allow 7-8 hours of sleep, per night. This can be done by sticking to a daily schedule including going to bed, and awakening, at the same times each and every day.

Prepare for bed

Another important factor is to prepare for bed. Each night spend 30-45 minutes preparing for bed. This preparation should include; locking up the house, turning off all lights, brushing your teeth and washing your face.

Use calming, and relaxing, techniques before bed

The last suggestion we offer for implementing a sleeping pattern is to use calming, and relaxing techniques before bed. Some examples are as follows; take a bubble bath, walk the dog, go for a jog, read a book, drink warm milk or decaffeinated tea, yoga, and or, breathing techniques.

For most of us, getting to bed is a challenge. Maybe it’s because we are spending time with the kids, trying to finish a school assignment or working on a project for work. No matter the reasoning’s, following a sleep pattern can be more difficult than it sounds; however, the benefits of doing so is worth the sacrifices you will need to make.

A Better Understanding of the Different Causes of Dementia:

Dementia is common disease of the elderly effecting 1% of patients ages 60-64 and a whopping 30-50% of all patients ages 85 and older. With such high numbers of effected patients, and no current cure, it is crucial to educate yourself, and those you love, on the risk of dementia. To better understand the severity of dementia, we will provide a definition, explain the symptoms that may occur and determine what may be the causes of the disease.

Dementia defined

Defined, dementia is a disorder of the brain in which effect one’s memory, thinking, judgment, language and behavior. Mainly effecting the older population, dementia is a frightening disease and requires 24 hour care for the patient. A patient suffering from dementia should never be left alone and this oftentimes causes complication for their loved ones.

First signs of dementia

The first signs of dementia are as follows; memory loss, trouble planning, difficulty solving problems, complications complete daily task, confusion of day or time, trouble with eyesight, difficulty speaking or writing, poor judgment, withdrawal from social event and changes in mood or personality. If you notice any of these symptoms occurring to yourself, or a loved one, it is suggested to immediately consist a physician.

Later signs of dementia

The more severe symptoms of dementia, occurring at later stages include; forgetting recent events, forgetting medical history and other important information, difficulty performing task such as driving or cooking and unable to recall telephone number or home address. Due to the severity of dementia patients must be monitored 24 hours a day by a healthcare provider or loved one. A patient with dementia should not be left alone as he, or she, may wonder off and be unable to find their way to safety. Other severe symptoms of dementia also include wandering off, becoming lost, changes in sleep pattern and major changes in mood and personality.

Causes of dementia

There are many causes of dementia some of them being irreversible and others not. Dementia can occur on its own, Alzheimer’s disease, or can be caused by an infection or other disease. To make things simpler, we will first offer the irreversible causes of dementia then the reversible causes of dementia.

Irreversible causes of dementia

The irreversible causes of dementia are as follows; progressive dementia- Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy Body dementia, Vascular dementia, frontotemporal dementia, Huntington’s disease, dementia pugilistic, HIV, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and Parkinson’s disease. Each of these matters will lead to a worsening of the symptoms of dementia.

Reversible causes of dementia

The reversible causes of dementia are as follows; infections, immune disorders, metabolic problems, endocrine abnormalities, nutritional deficiencies, reaction to medications, subdural hematomas, poisoning brain tumor, anoxia and heart and lung disorders. Each of these matters have the ability to reverse, diminish, symptoms of dementia.

If you, or a loved one, have shown signs of dementia, it is suggested to discuss the matter with a physician. He, or she, can explain further details and provide treatment.

In the 1840s a Hungarian physician Ignaz Semmelweis tackled the problem of high rates of child-bed fever at a free clinic. He discovered that patients who were treated by physicians who had just dissected cadavers, had a higher chance of contracting the fever. So he then began to make all the physicians wash their hands before seeing patients, and unsurprisingly the rates of fever dropped drastically. The health community immediately adopted the indisputable findings and with new hygienic practices, saved the life of many patients! Well actually they were outraged, and didn’t accept the findings at all. Semmelweis’ theory didn’t adhere to any of the major theories of disease at the time. Some asserted that the doctors were gentlemen, and gentle-men’s hands were clean. Complaints from other physicians cost Semmelweis his job, and he was forced to work for a smaller hospital, where again he implemented hand washing, again reducing death rates. Despite this, no one believed Semmelweis, and he went mad. He died at 47 in an insane asylum. His ideas were only accepted years later when Pasteur discovered germs, and created the germ theory of disease.

Now the importance of handwashing seems like common sense, but what about drying them? It seems like a silly question, obviously washing hands should be followed by drying, but the story of Semmelweis shows that things which might seem obvious are anything but. Most Americans improperly wash their hands, and sometimes introduce harmful germs with how they dry them. This article will answer some questions that you never thought to ask like: What methods of drying should be used? Paper towels, cloth towels, air drying or hand dryers? What about environmental concerns?

To answer these questions first we need to address the composition of your hands. Your hands are covered in scaly layers of dead skin which are designed for hosting a colony of different types of bacteria and fungi(1). These flora are used to the dry environment of the skin and contribute by maintaining an acidic ph which discourages the growth of harmful germs(1). Since your skin is actually designed to host germs any hand washing method you use will actually only kill some of the germs on your hands. The object when we wash our hands is to destroy enough transient flora, like flu viruses, to restore the ‘normal’ flora(1). But it is also important to restore the natural environment of the flora, your hands, to the original state. This means drying your hands since they are mostly dry surfaces. Damp hands would encourage bacteria that are not native to your skin. They also attract new germs like magnets. In fact damp hands are 1000 times more likely to spread germs than dry ones(2).

But is it better to dry your hands with a paper towel, cloth towel or a hand dryer? One study by the Mayo Clinic showed that there was no difference between three. There was no difference between using a paper towel, cloth towel or a hand dryer for 30 seconds(4). But there are some caveats to this research. First is that they used a new cloth towel for every participant. Although there is no difference between cloth and paper towels when both are new, because the cloth towel is reused it actually becomes a breeding ground for germs(3). In fact dish towels in kitchens have 20,000 times more fecal bacteria than toilet seats do(3). If these towels were used, they would just smear germs back on to clean hands. In the case of the hand dryers, studies where participants only used them for 10 seconds, instead of the 30 seconds used in this study, had more germs than the participants who used paper towels(4). American’s don’t even keep their hands under the faucet for the reccomended time of 20 seconds (about two repetitions of “Happy Birthday”) it seems unlikely that they will wait out the 30 seconds required by the dryer(5). Paper towels on the other hand are single use, and quick to dry your hands. But they are bad for the environment. They can’t even be recycled because of their low fiber content(6). But there is a way to reduce the amount of paper towels used to just one a day. Try the shake and fold technique as described bythis brilliant Ted talk. First shake your hands twelve times, and then take one sheet of paper towel, fold in half and dry your hands. With this technique you can get your paper towel usage down to one a day, and collectively we can conserve 571 million pounds of paper towels each year.

Fear is universal. It is experienced by everyone but not always in the same way. The context of the situation and the individual’s own proclivities play a large part in determining the extent of fear.

Fear is an intensely interesting phenomenon. Though experienced by all, it defies a simple description. It seems foolish to try. Instead, three scenarios are substituted as analogies. In the first, a child is alone in a darkened bedroom. In the second, a mother crouches in the corner of a room on the 20th floor of a burning building. With her young child by her side, she cowers hopelessly as the futility of escape dawns on her. In the last, a middle aged man stands alone in a bank lobby, several women cloistered behind him, the last barrier to a knife wielding psychopath making threats.

Each scenario evinces from the individuals involved a visceral reaction of sweat, adrenaline, nervousness and heightened awareness, colloquially known as fear. In its simplest form, fear is intended to drive the individual out of harm’s way. Much as pain induces a behaviorally positive result in regards to inanimate dangers, fear causes the individual to avoid threatening situations caused by animate creatures.

Fear, however, is not as simple as pain. Pain occurs for much the same reason every time, that is, from immediate physical damage to the organism. Fear, instead, manifests itself in a variety of ways. In the first scenario, the child only imagines the danger. The fear experienced by the child, though imaginary, is real enough to the child that the same visceral reactions take place as in the two latter scenarios. In other words, the child experiences “real” fear. Repeated exposure to this type of situation eventually resolves itself and the child is no longer fearful of the dark or the bogeyman or whatever. Similar situations resolve themselves throughout the life of any normal human being.

In the second scenario, one finds a woman confronted with the loss of her own life and that of her child. The fire encroaches and the smoke chokes. She watches as the fire approaches to within 10 feet and then turns to her right. An open window with access to the outside beckons. Unfortunately, 200 feet of open air deprive her of escape. She has no doubt that imminent death is upon her and her child. Devoid of options, she must make a most unpalatable decision; slow death by asphyxiation, excruciating death by fire or a blunt and painful death by defenestration. Couple this decision with the significant fact that her child accompanies her and one begins to understand the true nature of fear.

In this situation, the woman is confronted with the basest of fears; fear for her own life and fear for the life of her child. In addition, fear of the unknown and fear of making the wrong choice challenge this woman‘s mind. She is ultimately fearful that she will not choose wisely and inflict undue pain upon her and her child. The utter hopelessness of the situation is horrifying but ultimately it is decidable. One can only do what one can do. In the end, any decision is acceptable because it must be. The individual will eventually prefer the lesser evil, that is, the lesser fear, and act accordingly.

The third scenario offers the most interesting intellectual dilemma as there are actual choices to be made. While the situation of knife wielding maniac may seem, on its face, to be cut and dried, there are several determining factors as to its seriousness. How big is the knife? How physically intimidating is the psychopath? How serious does he seem about doing actual bodily harm to the women?

The unfortunate man in our scenario, albeit a possible hero, has many options to weigh. In addition, he must weigh them quickly. After all, there is a knife wielding psychopath in front of him. His own fight or flight reaction has probably already kicked in and his body impels him to head for the door. But that group of unprotected women is prompting his protective reflex. What to do, what to do?

In this situation, the effects of one’s upbringing are brought into play. Societal pressures determine the outcome. Unless a male is taught to “man up,” he is incapable of dealing with this situation in an honorable manner and he will run. Regardless of the overwhelming fear, a man has a moral obligation to stand between the lunatic and those women, even if it means his life. A decent, respectable society produces real men who are trained by their fathers to act accordingly. Perhaps, the point is belabored, but there is no substitute for real men. Cowardice is not a virtue in any society.

The physical manifestations of fear are multitudinous. Some people shake, some hide under the covers and still others react with aggression. It is the myriad ways in which people react to fear that make it such an interesting topic. It is not impossible to differentiate between the various levels of fear. All types of fear produce the same physiological effects but not the same mental ones. The context of each situation determines the individual’s ultimate fate.

In short, fear is intensely personal and, at its most base, is universal. In many instances, it is really a social construct. You are not naturally afraid but are taught what to fear. One does not actually fear something until a name is placed on it by society. The most obvious example is death. If society embraced death, few would fear it. Instead, modern Western civilization celebrates life. One is taught that death is to be feared and so it is. Death is inevitable but one must rage, rage against the dying of the light. In the end, death is part of life. So, what is there to fear?

Hydroponics allows gardeners to grow fruits and vegetables without using any soil. Plants are instead rooted in a soil-free medium or suspended with their roots submerged in liquid. A nutrient-rich solution is supplied to the plants on an ongoing basis, giving them all of the minerals they need in order to grow. Many different kinds of plants are often grown hydroponically, and almost anything that can be grown in soil can be grown with hydroponics. In most cases the process is simple and easily done in a home or greenhouse.

Berries are often grown with hydroponics. This includes blueberries, blackberries and raspberries. Strawberries are a particular hydroponics favorite, especially among home growers, because the plants are small and easily managed and the results tend to be quite good. Hydroponic berries grow faster than those grown in soil and are ready for harvest weeks before more traditionally grown berries are. Other types of berries grow well but need plenty of space to develop properly.

Since melons are water-loving fruits, they would seem to be a natural choice for growing in a hydroponic garden. All types of melons can be grown hydroponically, including watermelon, cantaloupe and honeydew melon. Because the plants get so large, however, melons require a good deal of space and cannot be grown in smaller hydroponic systems, but do well in individual buckets that are sturdy enough to support them. Trellises can be added for the vines, minimizing the space requirements and allowing for several melon plants to be grown much closer together than they otherwise could be.

Despite the fact that tomatoes are often considered a vegetable, they are actually classified as fruit. Tomatoes grow well in hydroponic systems and are often grown both in homes and commercially. Because hydroponic crops grow more quickly than soil-grown crops, tomatoes are ready for harvest sooner than they would be if grown in soil. It is also easier to produce them year-round on a more local basis, enabling growers to ship tasty and appealing vine-ripened tomatoes to local stores.

Although technically many trees could be grown hydroponically, it is not usually practical to do so. The exception to this is various types of dwarf trees, which will grow well in large hydroponic buckets and will produce such fruit as lemons, limes and oranges if their lighting and temperature needs are met. Banana trees will also grow and produce fruit when placed in a hydroponic system but require plenty of support and a warm environment.

There have been many cures suggested for impotence in the ancient times. Rooster genetalia, snakes, wolf’s testicles, bull’s testicles and many others. It might be baffling that anyone would try such outlandish remedies. Is sexual function really worth consuming such a wide variety of testicles? It actually might be because despite popular belief, testosterone is important for more things than sexual function. Low testosterone, Low T levels contribute not only to erectile dysfunction, but also to bone loss, hair loss, depression, and many other symptoms. The problem is also widespread, testosterone starts declining in men after age thirty, and about 30% of men after sixty suffer from testosterone deficiency. So when researchers in 1935 synthesized testosterone, they answered one of the most important medical questions humans have had. And the little blue pill finally came into the market, giving men a way to increase testosterone while avoiding animal testicles. But is the little blue pill the answer? Are there other things you can try? Yes!

First, the cause of the deficiency should be found. This could be something as simple as age, or something very dangerous like testicular cancer or Aids so it’s really important to consult a physician. To check if there is a deficiency, your doctor will order a lab. This test should be taken in the morning and should be repeated several times, since testosterone levels naturally fluctuate. If the deficiency is confirmed your doctor might offer several methods of hormone replacement therapy to you depending on what the cause is.

Your doctor won’t probably give you a pill, this method doesn’t supply enough of the hormone and could do liver damage. One method is an injection every two or three weeks. In other cases the doctor might prescribe a skin patch, or a gel. Children and women shouldn’t touch the gel. Another method is a pill that is absorbed through your gums. If you choose this method, then you will need to use a new pill every 12 hours. But if you don’t have a confirmed deficiency, or you do and want to try increasing testosterone in other ways, here are a few alternatives.

The most important thing to remember about testosterone is that it’s really costly for your body to produce. It’s an immunosuppressant, so your immune system has to be in tip top condition to be able to handle testosterone. It’s also responsible for muscle growth, and muscles demand more calories than fat. A fit person will burn more calories even while sitting than a sedentary person. So unless your body feels like it has everything it could want, it won’t make testosterone. To make sure your body is well supplied you need to eat regular meals, and don’t skip any. In addition make sure you fill your daily protein needs, and increase the amount of protein you eat if you work out.

Low testosterone, Low T can cause depression, but depression can also cause low testosterone. If you feel like you have symptoms of depression, it’s important to get to a psychiatrist to treat your depression first because as anyone who has been depressed knows, being depressed makes doing anything else much harder. Treating your depression might not directly increase your testosterone levels, but it’ll give you enough energy to follow the rest of these tips.

Exercise can be a great way to increase testosterone levels. Not only does your body give you a hit of testosterone as you’re working out, increasing your muscle mass will also cause more testosterone production. Be aware, however that exercises like running won’t help your testosterone levels like weight training will.

Shave off those extra pounds because obesity is a major cause of low testosterone, Low T, among other illnesses. Extra fat decreases testosterone production and increases estrogen, so its really important to keep your body fat percentage low.

Get lots of sleep. Testosterone and many other hormones are replenished while you sleep. Your body also produces Human Growth hormone in your sleep to increase and repair your muscles.

Try a supplement of Horny Goat Weed. The name sounds weird, but this supplement was used widely in ancient China to cure testosterone deficiency. Although the FDA doesn’t back it, many people report using it to good effect.

And finally, make sure to de-stress, or avoid stress. Stress creates Cortisol among other hormones, and these hormones will decrease the amount of Testosterone your body creates. Essentially if you’re stressed out, your body doesn’t feel like it can expend the energy to make more testosterone, its more interested in getting you out of the situation immediately. But if the situation is your workplace, you might not want to get out of it. So it’s important to work on strategies to de-stress.

So go forth and try these remedies. Remember that your body wants to produce testosterone only when it’s in its prime and these are all great ways to improve your quality of life. If however, these aren’t enough to improve your deficiency, you shouldn’t hesitate to talk to your doctor about pharmaceutical supplements. Keep in mind though that excess testosterone can cause prostate enlargement, prostate cancer and other ailments so be sure to keep your doctor in the loop. Good luck!

The Holidays can be a tough time for many people for a variety of reasons, including family strain, financial stresses, and time management issues. But it is often not recognized that the holidays and winter in general can be the cause of significant depression in some people.

The time change initiated at the beginning of November alone can be the reason why many people begin to feel sleepy earlier in the day and lacking in energy. Add to that the pressures of the holidays, where it is important to many to try to ensure a time filled with joy and family togetherness as well as the financial stress that can result from the focus on material things during this time of year, and the descent into depression can be crushing. Help Me With Depression
The first and most important thing to do is to find someone trustworthy to share these feelings with and gain support and understanding. Expressing what is troubling to you and being free to release your emotions can be a big relief. Having a support system is the best thing you can do to alleviate your feelings of depression. If you reach out, you may find that others struggle with the same type of problems and may be handling their situation in a healthier way. You can learn a lot from each other. If you cannot find someone in your immediate circle of friends and family, you can always seek out professional help for this reason. You would have access to an antidepressant, if that is deemed necessary to help you cope and get through the season. It is especially tough to feel with negative feelings during the holidays because of the expectation that the spirit of the season will generate unadulterated feelings of thankfulness and happiness. Repressing these feelings is not a healthy way to handle them. So what should one do when feeling down, depressed, or lethargic?

Secondly, because seasonal depression is a common experience, you may want to explore natural solutions to your symptoms. One way to do this is to find a way to increase the amount of natural light you have access to throughout the day. Take a break during your lunch hour and take a walk outside, especially on days that are nice and sunny.

Because of the importance of natural light in dealing with seasonal depression, you may want to explore whether a light therapy lamp would be beneficial to you. These special lamps are made to replicate natural sunlight. It is often recommended to sit by one of these lamps for at least 30 minutes every morning. This is believed to stimulate serotonin production in the brain, which helps to promote a good mood and an increased energy level. Recognizing your depression is the first step towards getting the help and support you need. And finding simple solutions to avert your symptoms can go a long way towards helping you get the most out of life, no matter what season it is.

Shaving is a daily morning ritual for many men the world over. While having a smooth face can make you look and feel clean and fresh, the act of shaving itself isn’t all that pleasant, and it can sting in the wallet just as much as it can on the face. Here are a few tips for men who are interested in getting a good shave every morning while saving money.

1) Start using double-bladed razors

Disposable razors have been around for a long time, but it was only in the late 1990s that major shaving equipment manufacturers started to sell razors with three blades. These razors, now extremely popular among shavers around the world, offer a closer shave than older models. Recently, Gillette, Schick, and Bic have tried to constantly one-up each other by introducing four- and five-bladed razor models that are purported by their makers to offer the closest shaves possible.

All of these razors are quite a bit more expensive than the older single- and double-bladed types, and despite all of the advertising hype surrounding them, they don’t offer the shaver appreciably different results. Double-bladed razors are much cheaper and more cost-effective to use than razors with three or more blades, and they offer a shave that should be sufficiently smooth for any man.

2) Use a cheaper brand of shaving cream

There are many different shaving creams on the market, but they all perform the same function. There’s no reason to buy expensive shaving creams when cheaper brands will do exactly the same job and provide the same amount of comfort. Barbasol is an old American shaving cream manufacturer that offers a wide variety of creams at lower prices than competing brands, and there are other cheap makes of shaving cream on the market that do the job of protecting your face just as well as the more expensive creams and gels.

3) Make your own aftershave

Aftershave performs the important function of healing the face after a shave, and many men have their own favorite brands. However, aftershave can also be quite expensive. Men who are interested in saving some money might consider making their own aftershave instead. A little apple cider vinegar mixed with equal parts water will also heal the small wounds left on the face, and at a far better price than store-bought aftershave. Witch hazel is also an excellent and inexpensive aftershave alternative.

4) Fill the sink with hot water instead of leaving it running

While it is possible to shave with cold water, most men prefer to use hot water instead. Hot water does a far better job of soothing the skin while shaving. However, it is wasteful to leave the hot water running while you shave. Simply run the faucet until the water is hot, then plug the sink and fill it, creating a hot water basin with which to shave. If you intend to use the razor again, be sure to rinse it under the faucet in order to remove any stray hairs after you’re done.

Shaving is a chore, but it doesn’t have to be an expensive one. It’s easy to get a great shave on the cheap, and all it takes is a change of habit.

Understanding Anaphylactic Shock

Anaphylactic shock, otherwise known as anaphylaxis is a dangerous allergic reaction to any number of allergens that can cause severe symptoms and in the worst cases can even lead to the death of the sufferer. It is important to be aware of the potential causes, outcomes and prevention techniques as one could easily be faced with this situation, even with people who believe that they have no allergies. The fact is they may simply not have yet come into contact with the allergen that evokes anaphylaxis for them.

What are the Symptoms of Anaphylactic Shock?

What makes anaphylactic shock so dangerous is that it affects major systems in the body, mainly the circulatory and respiratory system, but also including the airways themselves. For this reason, the symptoms of anaphylactic shock are heavily based around these systems. The symptoms you should look out for are listed below, but note that not all of these symptoms are necessarily present in every case of anaphylaxis:

Red and itchy skin, rashes, etc.

Dizziness.

Difficulty breathing.

Swelling of different parts of the body (face, airways, hands etc.).

Nausea/vomiting.

Metallic taste in the mouth.

Causes of Anaphylactic Shock

The causes of anaphylactic shock as mentioned above are due to the body’s reaction to certain allergens, which are normally proteins that make their way into the body. The body mistakenly thinks that the proteins are a threat to the body, much like it would with a virus or bacteria, and so releases antibodies to bind with the allergen. The bound antibody then proceeds to cause an inflammatory response in the body, leading to a combination, or all of the listed symptoms. In most people this reaction never occurs because the body correctly identifies the proteins as not being a threat.

The allergens/proteins mentioned, generally get into the body orally, or sometimes via the bloodstream. Below are a few of the more common ways that the proteins may enter the human body:

Eating certain foods (peanuts, seafood, wheat etc.).

Insect stings or bites.

Antibiotics and other medications.

What can be Done About Anaphylactic Shock?

The simple truth is that anaphylactic shock is caused by the body’s incorrect response to allergens. This means that as of now there is no “cure” as such currently, and the only way to prevent further attacks is to make sure that you are not exposed to the allergen in the first place. This can mean avoiding eating certain food types, having your allergies listed on medical records so you are not given a certain type of antibiotic again, or in some cases avoiding certain countries or regions so as not to get bitten by the insect that causes anaphylaxis.

Sufferers that are aware of their allergy will also more than likely carry around an EpiPen that contains the hormone epinephrine (adrenaline) so that in case of anaphylactic shock, they, or somebody else, can administer epinephrine, which is very effective at reducing the symptoms and can in many cases save the sufferers life. Epinepherine should only be injected into muscle and not fatty tissue or the veins/arteries. Injecting it into fatty tissue will reduce its efficiency, and injecting it into veins/arteries can cause incredibly dangerous effects.

An ambulance should be called whether or not the epinephrine is successful at reducing the symptoms, and should definitely be called if the sufferer does not have an EpiPen on their person. If the sufferer stops breathing before the ambulance arrives, then CPR should be performed, preferably by a certified first aider, or failing that someone who has knowledge of how CPR should be carried out.

Conclusion

Anaphylaxis is something that unfortunately cannot be cured, but it can be prevented due to vigilance, have its symptoms reduced by epinephrine and is a perfectly survivable condition. The problem is that some people will be unaware of their severe allergy due to never coming into contact with the allergen. If you suspect that you may be allergic to something, it really is worth seeking medical advice to gauge the severity of your symptoms and to find out the likelihood of suffering anaphylactic shock in the future, enabling you to take the necessary precautions.

With the ever rising costs of health care, Christian health care sharing programs are a great option for anyone who may not be eligible for insurance, or anyone who wants to be involved in caring for others

Christian Care Ministry’s Medi-Share program is one unique health care program. It is not considered Christian Health Insurance . It is a group based health care program in which participants pay a monthly fee that is used to help to pay a members medical costs. Medi-Share is a Christian based program, meaning only those who are Christian believers and live an appropriate Christian life style are eligible to participate. This means that a participant must prove their Christian faith by regularly attending Christian services, Complete a statement of faith, believe in the doctrines of the Bible regarding the body, not engaging in sexual intercourse outside of marriage and avoiding tobacco, and abuse of drugs and alcohol.

Those who participate in a Medi-Share option love the fact that they are working to help out each other. Not only does this community based program work together to provide help with medical expenses, the people involved are also caring individuals who are praying for those who are brothers and sisters in Christ, who are in need sick or afflicted in some way. It is a program that allows the Christian community to come together to help out many others in need.

Participants in Medi-Share also love the emphasis on lifestyle. Only those who are Christian believers are eligible to participate. Participants are comforted in the knowledge that their money that is contributed will never go to pay for an abortion. Since those who are involved in this program have committed to certain things, they also know their money will never go to support someone who is addicted to drugs or alcohol or making other poor choices that will incur unnecessary medical bills.

Another thing that participants enjoy about Medi-Share is that everyone is contributing to the program with their monthly financial commitment. This means that there will always be money to help those in need of healthcare and they can be comforted in knowing that when they are in need of medical services, the financial help needed will be provided, But remember it is not Christian Health Insurance.

With the ever rising costs of health care, Medi-Share is a great option for anyone who may not be eligible for traditional insurance, or anyone who wants to be involved in a caring, Christ centered group whose main focus is to help others.

Medi-Share is also mentioned in these articles as well .

An individual should be hospitalized for a mental health problem when he presents an immediate danger to himself or others or is so disabled that he can’t take care of his basic needs. Though there’s a stigma attached to mental health hospitalization, mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of. One in four families has at least one member with a mental disorder (World, 2003) and 2.4 million Americans are hospitalized for psychiatric illness each year (CDC, 2010). Knowing the warning signs can prevent a treatable illness from turning into a prison sentence or a suicide.

Someone needs to go to an inpatient facility if he or she is at risk for suicide. Feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness and a desire for death are a common symptom of clinical depression and bipolar disorder. Persistent thoughts about death or wanting to die can sometimes be managed on an outpatient basis with medication and therapy. However, when someone is thinking out a specific plan to end her life, inpatient treatment may be required. Warning signs include talking about feeling worthless, talking about death, giving away prized possessions and self-injury.

Another sign that hospitalization may be required is mania so intense that it presents a threat to the patient’s safety or that of others. Mania is a symptom of bipolar disorder. Symptoms of mania include intense feelings of happiness, irritability or anger. Most people experiencing mania do not harm themselves; they can, however, be hurt (or get in trouble with law) if their condition causes them to take unnecessary risks. Warning signs include loss of the need for sleep, speaking or acting faster than normal, making unrealistic or grandiose plans and any form of uncharacteristic impulsive or reckless behavior, such as overspending, driving too fast or engaging in unsafe sex.

A third sign that it is time to seek inpatient care is psychosis, also called psychotic tendencies. Though the word “psychotic” brings to mind violent criminal acts, the medical definition of psychosis is a loss of contact with reality (Merril, 2010). Symptoms include unreasonable paranoia, a feeling of being watched, “hearing voices” and visual or tactile hallucinations. Warning signs include disordered thinking, expression of unreasonable or delusional ideas and marked changes in behavior. Those experiencing paranoia may also exhibit unusual social isolation or seem abnormally attracted to conspiracy theories.

Lastly, a person should be hospitalized if mental health problems develop immediately after the birth of a child. For women, the hormonal changes associated with childbirth can cause postpartum mental health conditions such as postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis. The symptoms of these conditions are the same as those of clinical depression and psychosis, respectively. Warning signs include a mother losing interest in caring for her child, crying spells with little or no provocation, feelings of inability to be a good mother, desire to harm her child or delusional ideas.

Inpatient psychiatric hospitalization can be frightening and disruptive, both for the patient and for his or her family, but it is sometimes necessary when certain warning signs are present. Intensive treatment helps resolve symptoms before they get out of control, and timely, appropriate psychiatric treatment saves lives, prevents harm to the patient or others and may prevent legal problems that can haunt a person for years.

President Obama’s healthcare reform bill became law in March 2010 with the passing of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA). Since Medicare and Medicaid were introduced, this represents the most noteworthy change of the healthcare system in the United States. Most of the issues and concepts are not new and focus on whether changes will make the healthcare system more efficient and equitable. Economists have specific definitions of these 2 attributes. Efficiency refers to the objective of maximizing the amount of goods and services and total societal welfare that are produced with a fixed level of resources.

This implies a focus on costs. Equity refers to the distribution of goods and services across individuals in society, measuring who gains and who loses when some policy change occurs. With the passage of the healthcare legislation, it is expected that every aspect of care delivery will undergo transformation, from health insurance premiums to quality of patient care.

The law has instilled a sense of fear and confusion among the public who are not exactly sure of the likely implications of the healthcare reform bill. Its analysis has unveiled what is in it and what is not, and what the law can do and cannot do. What is now definitely known is that:

The healthcare law will no doubt increase the number of Americans with health insurance but it will fall short of the so-called “universal coverage.” A rough estimate is that by 2019, nearly 21 million Americans will be uninsured

The cost of the legislation will be much more than originally announced. It is expected to cost more than $2.7 trillion over 10 years of full implementation that will probably add $352 billion to the national debt!

A vast majority of the workers and businesses will notice very little, or in fact, no change in their already escalating insurance costs. But millions of other Americans including the younger and healthier workforce, and those who buy insurance through the non-group market companies will see their premiums rise faster

There is a huge possibility that the law could raise taxes by more than $669 billion by 2019 causing a reduction in economic growth and employment

Due to the rationing of care that will come about, it will interfere with how doctors practice medicine

Even if people are happy with their insurance now, they may not be able to keep it

The more is unraveled, the more bad news comes for American taxpayers, businesses, healthcare providers, and, the patients. It looks like the law will leave us as a nation much less healthy and less prosperous, adding to the fear of uncertainty in the minds of individuals, seniors, and businesses alike.

You probably are unaware that the legislation has made it a legal requirement for every American to get health insurance coverage that conforms to the government definition of “minimum essential coverage,” which means that simply having insurance does not necessarily meet the requirements of the legislative mandate. This individual mandate is one of the most important aspects of the legislation. And, one is in trouble if you do not get covered through your employer or some other group because then you are required to purchase individual coverage on your own. Beginning in 2014, those who failed to get insurance would be subject to a tax penalty that is minimal initially ($95 or 1 percent of your annual income in 2014), but then is raised quickly after that to $325 or 2 percent of your annual income in 2015, and so on. If you earn less than an income threshold individually then you are exempt from penalties (the threshold is roughly the poverty level), or if you cannot get insurance that will cost no more than 8 percent of their gross income. In 2016, about 4 million Americans could be affected by penalties that average around $1,000. The federal government hopes to raise several billion dollars from such penalties between 2014 and 2019!

The new law should be considered a massive failure because it is not designed to meet the three most important goals:

Health insurance for all Americans

Reduced insurance cost for individuals, businesses and government

Increased quality of care

Newt Gingrich, former US House Speaker said the new healthcare law is socialized medicine and must be repealed. He called the legislation “a back door road to socialized medicine” that puts America at the edge of a possible catastrophic failure.

Here are a few myths about socialized medicine:

Myth: A right to healthcare

Myth: Higher quality

Myth: More bang for the buck

Myth: Equal access

Myth: Less red tape

The bad news for employers is that more than two-thirds of companies could now be forced to change their current coverage, and almost 80 percent of small businesses could be affected as well. The employer mandate requires a company with 50 or more employees to provide health insurance to all the workers or they become eligible to buy insurance through the Exchange (insurance clearinghouses that match customers with providers and products). The employer mandate could affect people who already have health insurance coverage because far more people get health benefits through their employment. A recent study conducted by the Mercer group suggests that nearly one-third of employers could face severe penalties if they fail to meet the affordable insurance requirement. If it seems appealing that businesses will absorb the new tax burden, economists have a different viewpoint. By adding a new payroll tax to the hiring cost of a worker the company does not see any increase in the worker’s productivity. So, the employer will decrease wages, reduce raises, cut back on hiring, lay off current workers, or outsource the job altogether. It is possible that businesses will find it cheaper to pay penalties than conform to new rules. According to the Congressional Budget Office estimates, nearly 8 to 9 million people could end up on Medicaid, and the rest would purchase subsidized coverage through Exchanges. There are indications that a large number of large US corporations may drop current coverage.

The PPACA brings new federal insurance regulations that will drastically affect the way health insurance companies conduct their business. Some of these regulatory changes may have unintended consequences. Insurers will be required to charge the same premium for someone who is sick as for someone in perfect health. Smokers are likely to pay up to 50 percent more than nonsmokers. It will also increase premiums for younger and healthier individuals while making health insurance more affordable for those with preexisting conditions. A study by RAND Corporation concluded that premiums will rise by about 17 percent for young individuals as a result of the new law. Some other studies suggest higher increases. The legislation expects a net reduction of $416 billion in Medicare spending over ten years.

How the law impacts consumer-directed health plans

A variety of insurance arrangements such as health savings accounts (HSAs), flexible spending accounts (FSAs), and health reimbursement accounts (HRAs) fall under the scope of consumer-directed health plans. President Obama believes that health savings accounts are based on an idea that people have “an irrational desire to purchase more than they need.” The legislation puts new restrictions on consumer-directed innovations as HSAs and FSAs. While the legislation does not directly prohibit such accounts, the law adds new restrictions like doubling the tax penalty for HSA withdrawals from 10 percent to 20 percent if not used for “qualified medical expenses.” Over-the-counter medications and supplements will no longer be considered a “qualified medical expense.”

Taxes

The PPACA imposes nearly $669 billion in new or increased taxes over the first 10 years. Some of the taxes are:

Tax on “Cadillac” insurance plans – tax on high-cost insurance plans beginning in 2018

Payroll tax hike – an increase from 2.9 percent to 3.8 percent for couples with incomes over $250,000 or individuals with income over $200,000

Tax on investment income –

Limit on itemized deductions

Tax on prescription drugs

Additional taxes on insurers

Medical device taxation

The PPACA is a tax and regulatory nightmare for small and large business and individual Americans. Hospitals would be penalized for poor performance on quality measures like preventable hospital readmissions. The healthcare bill’s cost could be shifted from the federal books to businesses, individuals, and state governments by means of mandates and other regulatory requirements.

It is now clear to millions of Americans that they will not be able to keep their current coverage and they are scared of the future consequences when they fall sick. Contrary to President Obama’s assurances, the PPACA increases government spending, national debt, and the burden of government on the economy as a whole quite significantly. When it comes to controlling cost, the legislation is a failure. The trajectory of the US healthcare spending is clearly unsustainable, and because of the structure of utilization increase and rising costs, it raises the inevitable question of whether this will eventually lead to rationing of healthcare in the country. Since the healthcare would be controlled, this will lead to decreased patient flexibility. Elective surgeries may not be covered and medical procedures will be embroiled in politics. Patient options will be limited as in Canada where the universal health system leaves patients with no choice but to wait for over six months to get a routine Pap smear done. Many Canadians travel to the United States for their routine treatment. When the government has limited financial and professional resources, it will be faced with tough situations as to which patient must get treatment as a priority. Some patients may die waiting for treatment or may suffer longer because they cannot get timely treatment. No one wants to be subjected to waiting indefinitely to receive treatment.

Independent physician practices may be endangered by healthcare reform

President Obama’s healthcare reform could change how business is conducted by physicians which could probably mean the end of full-time, independent private practitioners. A survey conducted by The Physicians Foundation predicts that physicians will become employees in organizations, probably do part-time work, or work as administrators or leave the field of healthcare altogether. In fact, it appeared that most physicians will probably consolidate with other practices, or join hospitals or hospital and health systems for utilizing capital, technical, and administrative resources. The national survey of 2,400 physicians noted that only 26 percent of them would continue practicing the way they did for the next few years. The remaining 74 percent would retire, work part-time, close practice to new patients, and/or look for non-clinical jobs. The survey found that a majority of physicians felt that the healthcare reform would translate into decreased revenue and increased patient volume. Physician shortage will worsen with demand to care for more patients with higher quality of care and less cost. In the next 15 years, America could face a shortage of 150,000 physicians.

All of the above information represents an enormous price Americans have to pay in exchange for the healthcare legislation’s small increases in insurance coverage. Where is the “bang for the buck?” You have to prepare yourself by being ready to face cuts at work, probably get no raises, pay more for your existing premium, wait for months to get treatment, and lose your private practitioner who has treated you for years to some hospital or health care company.

Since most individual and employer mandates come into effect only in 2014 and others as late as 2018, there will be time to repeal or at least to make some significant changes to the legislation before all of it comes into play. If this does not happen, the legislation will prove to be unpleasant news for American taxpayers, businesses, healthcare providers, and the patients.

Americans cannot expect to see any major change to the healthcare system in the near future because most of the major legislative provisions are phased out slowly. Most mandates and subsidies do not begin until 2014!

Brace yourself America…… rest assured that what is being told today is probably only the beginning of the healthcare debate and there is more to come. One thing we know for certain – the healthcare reform debate is far from over!

You may have heard little about choline and how it relates to health, but don’t confuse that for lack of importance. Choline is an essential nutrient the body needs to function – and not everyone gets enough of it. What is choline – and what are the best choline food sources you need to get this nutrient naturally?

What is Choline?

Choline is often classified as a water-soluble B vitamin, because it works closely with other B vitamins. It has the important function of keeping cell membranes fluid and, it helps cells communicate with each other more effectively. It also allows nerves to interact with muscles by forming part of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. Choline is particularly important for a healthy liver and nervous system.

Food sources of choline are critical during pregnancy and early childhood since it plays a role in brain development. Choline also reduces inflammation and helps break down homocysteine, an amino acid linked with heart disease and stroke.

What Are the Best Food Sources of Choline?

Now that you know choline is an essential nutrient that needs to come from diet, how can you get more choline? One of the best sources of choline is eggs. A large egg has around 110 milligrams of choline – but be sure to eat the yolk since that’s where all the choline is concentrated.

Other good food sources of choline are soybeans, flaxseed, sesame seeds, quinoa, oats, barley, spinach, chicken, peanuts, lentils, butter, potatoes, cauliflower and bananas. Most women need around 450 milligrams of choline per day, while men should get about 550 milligrams daily.

To take advantage of food sources of choline, start the day with a large egg and a bowl of oat or barley cereal with ground flaxseed and milk. Eat a snack of peanuts and make bananas your dessert of choice. Enjoy a dinner of grilled chicken with cauliflower and spinach. Whip up a meal with this combination of choline-rich foods, and you’ll get more than enough of this overlooked essential nutrient.

What is Choline: The Bottom Line?

If you’re not getting enough choline, make some changes to your diet, especially if you’re pregnant. Choline has many important functions in the body, and you can get it naturally through foods.

So you’ve woken up inside that miniature sinkhole for the last time, and you’re getting ready to brave the market for a new bed. The problem is, it’s a dizzying maze out there. How do you navigate claims about this incredible new mattress or that amazing coil system to discover the Truth? How do you choose the best bed for you? The following article will explore what researchers and experienced mattress sleepers have to say about the ideal Dream Machine.

It will both investigate the kinds of beds out there, and help you to choose the right one for you.

What makes a bed?

There are a few factors which contribute to whether a bed is a bed, or just a shadow of a bed. The main factor is whether you are looking at the floor or the wall. But let’s discuss the others. Though what makes right right will differ for each person, there are certain qualities which define a good bed. It is important to understand these factors when selecting your nightly escape vehicle. The first factor is support. This is going to vary for each body. A bed that is the right firmness will give your body the support it needs. A larger body will likely need more support, and benefit from a firmer mattress, while a smaller body can do with a little more give. Support is important and can both ease existing back or joint pain, and prevent new pain from developing. The next factor is ‘even pressure distribution’. A bed that distributes pressure evenly is one that you sink into just enough, so that it contours your whole frame. This ensures that your weight is evenly balanced across the surface, and that you don’t wake up with strains or aches. If you like to sleep on your side, your hips and shoulders can take extra weight, so pay special attention to the pressure distribution abilities of your bed. Then, there is comfort. This is, of course, entirely subjective. Some people love sleeping on the plush beds found in hotels, or even sleeping directly on the floor. Others enjoy resting atop their stolen paintings.

Bed 101

Keeping these basics in mind, let’s cover the many varieties of mattresses out there, and see how they fare. The most famous bed, or rather, mattress type, is the innerspring. That’s your classic bed. Known for being good to jump on or do other things on, innersprings come in a variety of firmness. Innerspring mattress cores consists of different types of metal coils. The gauge and amount of coils will determine the support given. A lower gauge means a thicker coil and therefore greater mattress firmness. That often means more support. More coils is typically better for support too, but pay attention, as sometimes a high coil count means thinner springs (them tricky marketeers), and overall, will actually offer less support. What can happen is your body can sink down in different places, resulting in pain upon waking, as your muscles strain to support what the mattress has not. Innerspring mattresses are often padded with foam or layers of material which make them more cushiony and comfortable. Some even contain a built-in ‘pillow-top’, which can be made of memory foam. Overall, the best way to know if a particular innerspring, or any bed for that matter, works for you is to lie on it. The salesperson can say what they will. But only your body will know the truth.

You may have encountered the idea that the firmer a mattress, the better, to help ease back pain. However, there is good evidence which suggests a slightly more Goldilocks approach. A double-blinded study published in 2003 in the Lancet[1] tested 313 participants experiencing chronic low back pain, by having them sleep on either medium-firm or firm innerspring mattresses. Those sleeping on the medium-firm mattresses experienced significantly more pain relief overall than those on the firm varieties, and the study’s interpretation of its findings was that medium-firm mattresses can help relieve chronic low back pain.

Interestingly, http://www.sleeplikethedead.com, a consumer review website for all things sleep, Innersprings consistently rank lower than all other mattress varieties in terms of durability, long-term comfort, and pain relief. Even with good initial support, innersprings can sag or get lumpy over time, and though a box spring beneath your innerspring can both increase softness (should you want that) and reduce mattress wear, these aging rectangles can take their toll on your body. Innersprings may be the most traditional mattress variety, but they’re not necessarily the best. So what else is out there?

Foam. There are two main types of foam mattress: memory foam, and latex. Foam mattresses typically offer even pressure distribution. On a foam mattress, the body is evenly supported and weight is holistically distributed. This can allow for a sleeping-on-a-cloud feeling, and relief from varying types of pain. The difference between memory foam and latex foam are the materials involved. Though both have a similar feel, memory foam tends to retain heat more easily. Therefore, if you know you heat up like your neighbors do when arguing about their Jesus scarecrow, memory foam may prove uncomfortable at times. Latex, which is typically more breathable than memory foam and will not sleep hot like memory foam, is the mattress of choice for allergy sufferers and those with chemical sensitivities. It seems to offer the best of many worlds. You can choose foam mattresses of varying densities (firmness) to suit your physical needs. Like an innerspring, a good foam mattress should be of a medium to firm density, as anything softer may feel extremely comfortable, but in the long run, won’t provide adequate support. An interesting fact: if you share a foam bed, you will benefit from motion isolation, meaning that movement on one side does not affect the other (“pocket springs” in an innerspring provide the same benefits).

Speaking of sharing the bed, sometimes it is challenging to take two people’s needs into account in one bed choice. One solution to this is the Sleep Number system. This is essentially an air-bed with adjustable firmness on either side. Both sleepers can individually adjust their side to their preferred conditions. Air beds are valued for their adjustable nature, a feature not found in most other mattress types. As your body changes over time, air beds can adjust to the cycles of your life. You can change the firmness, controlling how much support you receive and tweak the bed to suit your personal comfort. As well, you can place a memory foam topper on the mattress surface, thus gaining easy control over both support and pressure relief.

Water beds, what the name implies, contain a core with water chambers. A high quality waterbed with enough firmness can provide adequate support, and can properly contour the body, distributing all pressure nice and even. Waterbeds are often equipped with heaters, which can be soothing to aches and pains. However, if you’re in need of something particularly firm, waterbeds are likely not the way.

Futons, however, just may be. Futons are japanese-style mattresses that are typically hard, and sometimes used on the floor above a tatami mat. Though some adore them, the futon’s hard surface is not for everybody. Depending on your body type and preferred sleeping positions, a futon may feel heavenly, providing you with the support you didn’t even know you needed, or it could be painful, if certain parts of your body take an imbalanced amount of weight.

The idea behind sleeping on an extremely hard surface is that the total support offered by it can help the body to properly align. This may work if you are heavier, however for those with smaller bodies, bones and muscle may jut out unevenly, causing the body to bow and creating discomfort and pain. Many health professionals, including chiropractors advocate a sleeping surface that allows for the spine to conform to its natural curvature, as opposed to it being completely straight.

Your mattress may need to retire

Mattresses are not like wine, or running shoes. They do not age to win. Nor do they get broken in (except for perhaps Latex foams, which have been reported as excessively firm when new). Over time, the quality of a mattress will deteriorate and can affect your health. In a study published in the Journal of Chiropractic medicine, researchers found that new medium-firm innerspring mattresses made a difference. 59 participants reporting discomfort with their old mattresses reported significant improvement in their quality of sleep after replacing the old beds with new ones[2]. If you are experiencing back pain, particularly in the morning, a new mattress may provide huge relief. Innersprings are notorious for experiencing wear, and as previously mentioned, a box spring can help prolong its life. Though foam mattresses are often pricier, they also tend to last longer. An innerspring mattress should ideally be replaced every 5-7 years. High quality foams, air beds, and waterbeds tend to last 10 years or more.

A lot of time

A mattress is a huge investment, and you spend way more time on a bed[3] than you do driving a car or even shooting at the squirrels who keep stealing your tomatoes. Still, many people do not put much time or energy into making an informed bedding choice. But let us tell you, it’s worth it, and you may discover a pleasurable and healthful sleep you didn’t think possible. Keep in mind that though it can be helpful to begin your bed search with a budget, don’t be afraid to splurge if you find the One. (Although, ‘paying more for a mattress does not necessarily result in higher owner satisfaction’, according to Sleeplikethedead.com, which has surveyed more than 16,000 mattress owners)

Do some research; scour internet forums where people post unsolicited testimonials of their bedding experiences. See what people in similar situations have found beneficial. And be especially discerning of anything that you learn from those with the agenda to sell you a bed.

Once you have narrowed down the type of bed that might be best for you… put on your pajamas, grab a bottle of white wine, and head over to the mattress store. It’s time to test before you invest. Be adventurous. Even try those beds that seem all wrong, but feel so right. Lie down in the positions you like best. It is advised to lie on your potential bed for at least 15 minutes. Even if you feel strange, toss self-consciousness out the window in favor of the opportunity to make an excellent bedding choice for your health. Bring your sleeping partner if you plan on sharing a bed. A good bed will wait until you’re ready. So wait. Find out about warranties. Best to find a store that allows you to return the mattress after a few months, as warranties can be tricky. See what your friends have and sleep on their beds for a night (your close friends, asking to test out his new sleep-age memory foam mattress may not go over well with your boss).

By now, you are filled with information about beds and mattresses. You know what’s available, and you are more prepared to identify the best bed for you. Remember to consider the factors of support, even pressure distribution, and comfort when selecting your new bed, and wait until you find one that feels right. Though the bedding industry will constantly evolve (and hey, the human body as well. What are we gonna sleep on once we finally sprout those wings?), hopefully you now feel more empowered to choose the best sleeping surface for your health and good sleep. So good-luck and godspeed, and a million well-supported, equally weight distributed, and nicely contoured dreams. Good night.

Physical therapy is an area of medicine that focuses on treating musculoskeletal disorders. The goal of physical therapists is to alleviate pain in their patients. For instance, in patients with back pain, physical therapy helps to strengthen the core muscles in their back, which adds to a person’s overall wellness. Ultimately, physical therapists strive to restore total functional independence to the patient. Most patients visit physical therapists for chronic pain problems, if they have injured themselves or if they recently underwent surgery. People with pain in their back, knees, neck, shoulder or other joints would benefit greatly by finding the best physical therapist in their area. With proper planning and resolve, you will be able to find a great physical therapist that is best suited for your individual needs.
For a person experiencing pain, most insurance companies require that he or she try physical therapy before turning to expensive surgery to fix the problem. Sometimes, participation in a physical therapy program can actually negate the need for surgery. Other times, physical therapy serves as part of the after-surgery care and recovery process. For example, if a person undergoes surgery to repair a rotator cuff, then working with a physical therapist post-operation will play a huge part in a successful recovery.
Another common problem is that many patients suffer from degenerative disc problems in their back. Normally, a problem like this requires surgery; however, patients find that a physical therapy regimen helps to ease pressure and pain in their lower back. Seeing a physical therapist will help in regaining the full range of motion for replaced joints or discs in the back. Treatment by a physical therapist may also be necessary for remedying other kinds of injuries as well. A person who lost a finger, only to have it reattached, will need to practice with a physical therapist to regain feeling and movement in that finger. A person who has been an invalid for an extended period may also require physical therapy to help regain their motion and functionality.
When looking for a good physical therapist, it is important to check with your insurance company to see what requirements they have. You will usually have to pick a therapist that is in-network, rather than out-of-network. Even with an in-network doctor, insurance companies may still limit the number of visits they are willing to cover. If you have narrowed your search down to just a few potential physical therapists, it is a good time to inquire into their previous work history. Do not be afraid to ask your potential therapists directly about their success rate with other patients. One last option is to contact your state board of physical therapy to see if any complaints have been filed against the physical therapist you are considering. A good physical therapist will double as a mental health therapist during therapy sessions. Physical therapy is very hard work, especially for patients in severe pain or recovering from surgery. When the patient feels tired or claims they can no longer continue, the physical therapist is there for motivation.
Another sign of a good physical therapist is one that will not allow any excuses from the patient. Instead, the therapist pushes the patient to his or her limits, which aids in a full recovery. The therapist is there to inspire the patient in order to help him or her regain full independence; this is especially important for elderly people who have problems getting around on their own. Most importantly, make sure that you feel comfortable with the physical therapist you choose, as the therapist may have to examine sensitive areas of your body to check for swelling or heat. Your therapist may also massage your muscles as part of therapy. With the help of a good physical therapist and the dedication to follow-through with the exercises at home, a patient often recovers totally and is able to enjoy life again.
